Eyeology
"I firmly believe that eyesight is so much more than just vision testing. It is the window to your body"
My name is Dr. Munsa Rana, I am from Brampton, Ontario. I am a new Optometrist practicing at my recently opened clinic, Eyeology, located in the heart of Brampton at Peter Robertson Blvd and Torbram Road where we practice in English, Spanish, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu & Gujrati. We focus on medical optometry and educating our patients to the best of our abilities. I firmly believe that eyesight is so much more than just vision testing. It is the window to your body. Your eyes can tell your eye care professionals many things that are existing within your body and can be where you can see the first sign of such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and beyond.
I had the privilege of going to school in Puerto Rico, where I was exposed to many different ocular pathologies, ocular prosthetics and understanding of the hispanic community in PR. I decided to return and open my practice in Brampton, as I felt there was a need to bridge the gap between the importance of eyecare and the relation it has with your body. I also felt there was a need for accessible eyecare. This led me to our community initiative, Seva Sunday. Seva Sunday is one of my favorite days of the month. At Eyeology, the first Sunday of the month we hold Free Vision Screenings from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm where we have Optometrists, Dieticians, Medical Physicians and Diabetes Canada present to offer educational services to the community. These days are quite busy and allow us to make eyecare accessible. We continue to do Seva Sunday every month and look forward to involving many others to help serve our community even better (Thanks to our dedicated Volunteers!). There are many inspiring stories that come through this clinic and it warms my heart to know that we can be here to help. Through attending vision camps and free cataract surgeries as a child in India, to offering services to make eyecare accessible in Brampton, I can truly say I am very satisfied to see this community getting the help they deserve.
The biggest challenges I see with people that have vision loss or experience ocular trauma are the mental and emotional aspects of it. Especially in the South-Asian community, many people think these changes are setbacks & hinder their lives, whereas these changes can be aspects that propel you forward in life giving you a different way of caring and understanding your body and setting you apart.
I hope that the general public takes advantage of seeking help from their eyecare professionals who are always ready and willing to help anyone and everyone out. I hope they understand the importance of their yearly eye examinations and how things like diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions can affect their vision.
